An unusual desaturase in Aquilegia vulgaris.

Aquilegia vulgaris seed oil contains high levels of the rare fatty acid columbinic acid (18:3 Delta(5,9,12)), which is unusual in having the double bond at the Delta(5) carbon in the trans configuration. Columbinic acid was found to be a seed-specific fatty acid not only present in the storage oil but also in membrane lipids. Several putative gene fragments have been isolated from plant RNA wit...

Cytoplasmic inheritance redux.

Since the early twentieth century, inheritance was seen as the inheritance of genes. Concurrent with the acceptance of the genetic theory of inheritance was the rejection of the idea that the cytoplasm of the oocyte could also play a role in inheritance and a corresponding devaluation of embryology as a discipline critical for understanding human development. Development, and variation in devel...

Maternal Cytoplasmic Inheritance

We explicitly solve and analyze a series of deterministic continent-island models to delimit the effects of pollen and seed migration on cytonuclear frequencies and disequilibria in random-mating, mixed-mating and self-fertilized populations. Given the critical assumption of maternal cytoplasmic inheritance, five major findings are (i) nonzero cytonuclear disequilibria will be maintained in the...

Paternal Cytoplasmic Inheritance

We continue our study of the effects of pollen and seed migration on the cytonuclear structure of mixed-mating plant populations by analyzing two deterministic continent-island models under the critical assumption of paternal cytoplasmic inheritance. The major results of this study that contrast with our previous conclusions based on maternal cytoplasmic inheritance are (i) pollen gene flow can...

Protective effect of Aquilegia vulgaris (L.) on carbon tetrachloride-induced oxidative stress in rats.

The ethyl ether extract of A. vulgaris inhibited in vitro microsomal lipid peroxidation (IC50 58.8 microg/ml) and showed moderate ability to scavenge superoxide radicals and to chelate iron ions. The extract (100 mg/kg body weight, po) decreased uninduced and enzymatic microsomal lipid peroxidation in the liver of male rats pretreated with CCl4 (1 ml/kg body weight) by 27 and 40%, respectively....
